intern.spotlight
Every week, we will be interviewing a phenomenal intern where they will share their experience and any advice they might have.
This week we have Kai Cash, one of the first members of intern.club
Kai, can you give a brief intro about yourself?
I am currently an intern at Blackstone Charitable Foundation in New York City working primarily on Blackstone Launchpad which is an initiative that partners with Techstars and Future Founders to provide best in class support to early stage entrepreneurs. I have 5+ years of experience working with founders, investors, and students to build start-up ecosystems and have started two companies of my own.
Prior to my current role, I worked with J-PAL in India doing TB research, was a maker and machinist at Williams College, worked as a growth intern/analyst at CapitalG in San Francisco, and most recently co-founded and ran an incubator at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China as a Schwarzman Scholar. In addition to my work at Blackstone I am currently also contracting with two startups (one pre-product/pre-rev and one post) & helping to launch a venture fund in Europe focusing on purpose/profit companies. I graduated from Williams with a Bachelors in Economics and Tsinghua University with a Masters in Global Affairs.
Wow, what don’t you do! I remember when we first met you were interning at CapitalG, which is a large growth fund spun out of Google. How did you find that job, coming from a liberal arts school?
CapitalG was the result of being in the right place at the right time honestly. People are paying attention to the things you do in your direct community and you never know who will walk up to you and/or recommend you for a role. I think they saw something in me because I was super active on campus with other things and knew that I would represent them well if I worked at CapitalG.
Advice:
Keep solving the problems right in front of you first and when you do, bring people into the mix to help you.
Let everyone know what you’re up to! Be open to connecting with people and getting feedback.
Pay attention to the seemingly insignificant things because those are the things that bring people together.
Choose to be lucky. you can make your own luck if you’re strategic enough, but do it in a way that isn’t annoying.
Most importantly, be yourself.
How has intern.club helped you in your journey?
Intern.Club helped me to build relationships during my first trip to the Bay Area and accelerated my adjustment to the tech and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Since then, intern.club has served as a valuable platform for connecting with other innovators and game changers to make a meaningful difference on problems in the world. More than anything else, my meme game has been stepped up 100x with the stickers and memes shared here. No, but in all seriousness I’ve found phenomenal community all over the globe through this platform and I am excited to keep learning and growing with all of these folks.
Well we are certainly glad to have you. You can reach Kai in intern.club, @Kai Cash, and also follow him on Linkedin and Twitter
That’s it for today, folks. If you’d like to give us feedback on what you’d like to see in the newsletter or Slack, please do so here
